The Sitepoint Marketplace is now Flippa.com and it’s pretty darn cool if you ask me! They seem to have kept all of the features from the old marketplace and added several more. What I really like is that they transferred all accounts over to this new site so nobody lost their feedback, listings, verification, or anything else.

There’s no doubt that “Flippa” is the place to be if you want to make money with site flipping, blog flipping, domain flipping, or if you are just trying to buy or sell a website. It’s got everything the old Sitepoint Marketplace had and more.

A domain broker named Rick Latona, who happened to be named the domainer of the year in 2008, and is one of the largest domain brokers in the world, will sell your domains for you. He doesn’t charge any money upfront to sell them either. He simply takes 10% of the money you make from the domain sale, which is extremely fair considering he is basically doing all the work for you.

Rick has a very simple online form set up on his website for you to submit your domains for him to sell. Then, he will put them up for sale in his domain name newsletter. You can read his FAQ to learn a little more about the process.

Domain flipping is very similar to site flipping but it is a little bit different. The main difference is really just that there is no site attached to the domain you are selling. The rest of it is pretty much the same. You buy and sell domains through a similar process as you buy and sell websites.

It’s a lot easier to flip domains than it is to flip sites because you don’t really have to do any work, but the profit margins are typically a lot lower. Sure, you can sometimes get an expired domain for really cheap that is worth a lot of money or just get a great deal on buying a domain that is worth a lot more than you paid for it. These types of domains are great for flipping and can make you a lot of money very easily.

However, domain flipping is not usually so easy or profitable. There are a lot of professional domain flippers that pretty much have the market cornered and buy all the good domains to flip before an average person like you or me can get our hands on them.

With that being said, you can still make money flipping domains. I recently purchased an expired domain for $5 and sold it for $100. That’s a pretty darn good profit for very little time or work. Although, this isn’t very typical unless you really know what you are doing and have a lot of money to invest in buying a lot of domains.

I find it’s best to stick to site flipping / blog flipping because most of the time you can make a lot more money doing it and once you get a good system it’s just as fast and easy as flipping domains. Even if you find a great domain to flip you might as well develop it a little bit before flipping it because you will get a lot more money out of it. People see a lot more value in a domain with a full website or blog on it than they do in just the domain name.

Actually I can sum this whole post up right now by saying that domain flipping and site flipping are similar but different, and most people will find it easier to make money flipping websites than they will flipping domains. At least the kind of money worth talking about!

In the end it’s up to you. No reason you can’t give both a try. Sometimes I like to just flip a domain instead of developing it because I am lazy. But most of the time I would rather make more money from it so I develop the domain into a website before selling it.
