E. Brian Rose and GPL Licenses

If you are flipping anything, you need to know about this!  This information can really help your website flipping business massively.  How you ask?  How about getting great premium themes and plugins for free and using them on sites you sell and telling the buyers of the great themes and plugins they are getting as part of the deal.  No more worries about buying expensive developer rights and all of that. 

So what is it I am talking about here?  I just bought a WSO I just couldn’t pass up. It was created by E. Brian Rose. In his headline he states how this WSO is going to be very controversial. And he wasn’t kidding! I think a lot of developers are going to be a bit pissed with this.

Basically it is a very short report on GPL law and how to use it for your extreme advantage. What it basically says is that you can ‘rip off’ anything on wrodpress.org and resell it. He backs up all of this and I think this WSO is really going to open some flood gates.

There are also links to around 70 themes that you can begin pilfering right of the bat. It isn’t as clear as I’d like. I’d like a bit more specifics as to exactly which parts of the themes he listed are usable.  So if they are usable, they are also sellable.  And that means they are okay to use on your Flippa sites with out needing to transfer any kind of license to the client!  How much cash can that save you?

It will be interesting what happens now. Do developers pull their themes off of WordPress? Will everyone just copy everyone else for now on? Lots of questions. But a great thought provoking read. If selling themes or plugins aren’t your thing, then skip this. But if you are planning on selling themes, plugins or are looking for a product of your own to sell, then grab this.

One thing to note, in order to read your PDF you’ll need to download what is an .exe file. It is some kind of file that is supposed to protect the PDF from people sharing and hot linking, etc… I had a problem with it and needed support. But all was taken care of quickly enough.

Newbies often make simple mistakes that mean their blogs either don’t sell or they don’t sell for a high enough price. In this post we’re going to look at some of the most common mistakes people make with blog flipping and then look at how you can avoid making the same mistakes yourself…

Your Blog Doesn’t Look Good Enough

As a blog flipper, the way your blogs look is absolutely crucial. People expect the blogs you sell to look professional and fit in well with the subject of the blog. Many people make the mistake of not presenting their blogs well enough, using generic or uninspiring designs. This is crazy because it is pretty simple to get a blog to look good.

There is no shortage of blog templates available for platforms such as WordPress that mean you can get a professional looking blog online in no time at all. If you want to achieve a good price for your blog then consider investing in a ‘premium’ template. These will cost you money but it’s well worth it because it will make your blog much more appealing and attractive to buyers.

Choose a blog template that fits in well with the subject in question and try to choose one which isn’t being used by hundreds of other bloggers – the more unique the template the better. If you can afford it, it’s also possible to get your very own custom templates created – and this can vastly increase the sale price of your blogs.

Your Blog Is In The Wrong Niche

The simple truth is that some niches are more popular and/or profitable than others. As a blog flipper you need to find out which niches people want to get into most in order to develop blogs in those niches to sell to those people! A blog in an unpopular niche is unlikely to sell well, no matter how good the design, template and content of the blog is.

The good news is that it is easy to find out what’s popular at the moment. Have a look at blog flipping sites such as Flippa and spend some time researching which niches are selling for the highest prices. The sheer number of blogs for sale on a particular topic is also a good indicator of its popularity – if lots of people are creating blogs in that niche then they are obviously selling well.

Another good place to do some research into this is internet marketing forums. Have a look at sites such as the Warrior forum and look at the topics people are talking about – chances are you’ll find certain topics coming up again and again. Remember that the Warrior forum is populated by online business owners and people who are looking to make money online, so these people may very well be interested in buying a blog on those subjects they are discussing.

Using Duplicate Content or Content Which Isn’t Good Enough

Content is at the heart of any blog, so it’s absolutely essential that your content is up to scratch. A common mistake that newbie blog flippers seem to make is filling their blogs with generic content (for example PLR articles which are also on lots of other peoples blogs too.) It’s fine to use PLR content but at least spend some time rewriting the articles a little to make them unique to your blog.

Also think about the sale price you’re looking to achieve – if it’s at the upper end of the scale then it’s best to create (or have created for you) content which is 100% unique as this is much more valuable to buyers. Remember too that the information contained in the content cuts the mustard. You see plenty of blogs which are filled with content which you would describe at best as ‘suspect.’

Your Advert is Poor

You can have the best blog in the world, but if the advert is poor when you come to sell it you’re likely to be disappointed with the results you achieve. Lots of adverts you see on sites such as Flippa.com are very poor indeed, with missing or confusing information. It is absolutely essential that you include all information a buyer would want to know in your advert and that you present it in an appealing way – remember this is your only opportunity to sell yourself and your blog!

Think about the main selling points of your blog. If it’s earning money then it will almost certainly be that – but if it’s a new blog that you’re selling straight after creating it then your ‘angle’ is going to be slightly different. In this case you could focus your advert around highlighting the quality of the design, the high level of content or the monetization potential provided by the blog, for example.

Final words…

As your experience as a blog flipper grows you will quickly learn from your mistakes and become wise to potential pitfalls. The best advice I can give is to use your common sense at all times and think about things from your buyer’s point of view. If you were looking to buy a blog yourself, what would you be looking for?

Remember also that doing your research can greatly enhance your chances of a successful blog flip. Find out what people want and then give it to them – if you can do that there is a lot of money to be made in this business.

Website flipping is more popular than ever as an online business. More and more savvy entrepreneurs are realizing that they can do just as well financially, and often even better, with “virtual real estate” (websites) than they can with physical real estate, especially now that the housing market has tanked.

Well, the housing market may be suffering, but online real estate in the form of websites is thriving, and prices are only continuing to go up. Lots of people now look at owning websites as a good long-term investment strategy, building up their virtual properties and renting out space on them, just like the landlords of old.

Then, there are the short-term strategists, also known as the flippers. These are the people who hold onto a website only for a short time, build it up (or spruce it up, if they’re buying a used one), then flip it within a few months for huge profits. This is also following the model of the house flippers who thrived during the real estate boom of the early part of the 21st century.

If you’re looking to start a profitable online business that is virtually recession-proof and that will only continue to increase in profitability the more you put into it, then website flipping is for you.

It is a stable, reliable source of income if you go about it correctly, and can bring you large lump sums of cash over and over again with ease. And, there’s no time like the present to get started!

There are two main approaches to website flipping. The first one is to buy an already existing website that is unattractive, under-monetized, not properly promoted, or all three. You can usually get these sites for a pittance. Then, you make it pretty, get it to start making some money, and promote it a little bit.

It usually doesn’t take much time or effort to do this with an existing site. Populate the website with well-written, search engine optimized, relevant content, add some attractive graphics, and promote it to the proper audience.

Once the website starts making money….and it shouldn’t take long if you’ve done things correctly….you can turn around and sell it on Flippa for 10 to 12 times its monthly earnings with ease. The Flippa marketplace is teeming with people who are eager, even desperate, to buy a website that has a proven history of making money.

It doesn’t even have to have been making money for very long to sell. I often sell my websites after only a month. If they’ve made any amount of money in Adsense, Amazon commissions, or other affiliate income, they will (and do!) sell like hotcakes!

Blog flipping and site flipping are becoming increasingly popular. In fact they can seem at times that every man and his dog is looking to get in on the act. Browse around internet marketing forums such as the Warrior Forum and you’ll find no end of people talking about blog flipping and asking a whole manner of questions about how they can get started as a blog flipper or how they can increase their success.

Competition to blog flippers is becoming ever greater and thus standing out from the crowd is becoming increasingly hard. Gone are the days when you can throw up any old blog and people will buy it.

So just how do you get people to want your blog and not somebody else’s? How do you get them to actually click on your auction listing in the first place and then convince them once they are there that your blog is the one to buy?

There are many reasons why blogs and websites sell (and don’t sell) but one of the main ones is the actual quality of your auction listing – ie. The title and the main auction advert. The better your listing is the more chance there is that it will sell and that it will achieve the price you are looking for.

The quality of your auction listing is more important when you are selling a low priced, un-established blog than it is when you are selling an established blog that is generating revenue and getting lots of traffic. The latter type of blogs sell well because they are already successful and they almost sell themselves. If a blog is making money (and the higher the better) then it is almost guaranteed to achieve a good price at auction of typically 5-10 times its monthly revenue. If on the other hand we are talking about a brand new blog which is receiving no or little traffic and is making no money at all then people need a little more convincing before they will buy it.

Here’s how to create your auction listing and details of the main things you might want to think about…

Your auction title

The title of your auction is absolutely crucial because it needs to get people to actually check out your auction listing in the first place. You can have the best blog and the best advert in the world but if nobody ever sees it you’re not going to achieve a successful sale.

A good auction title should be two things. It should capture people’s attention and make them want to click on it and it should also inform people about what it is you are actually selling so that they don’t feel in any way mislead once they’ve clicked onto your listing (vague attention grabbing auction titles generally don’t go down well because people get annoyed if they spend time reading through something which they weren’t interested in in the first place.

If you can, include essential information in the title such as the domain name of the site, the subject/topic/niche and any pieces of outstanding information which there is about your blog. If your blog is earning $1,000 a month through advert revenues, for example, then it might be a good idea to state that it is making $1,000 a month in the auction title. That will definitely get people interested!

Your main auction description

Once you’ve got people to click onto your auction it’s now the job of the main advert/auction listing to sell it to them…

Make sure that your listing contains all the essential information. People want to see exactly what they are buying so don’t leave out any details – and don’t be vague either. You would be amazed at the number of people who fail to explain things such as what the blog is actually about or where the content has come from (if it is unique content then that is a great selling point.)

The crucial thing in your advert/description is to point out clearly the main selling points of your blog. If it is generating revenue and profit then it might be a good idea to focus the advert around that. Include screenshots of earnings and traffic statistics as proof.

The starting price

Another thing to think about is the starting price of your auction because this can have a big impact on how appealing your blog is to potential buyers. Generally speaking a low initial starting price will attract more attention than if you start off at a higher price. A low starting bid usually attracts more bidders and this can ultimately have the affect of driving up the price as people start bidding against each other. This can also be a risky strategy however, so you might want to add a reserve price so that if the bidding doesn’t reach the level you want it to you can guarantee that you won’t be letting your blog go for a much lesser amount than you wanted to. You can also consider adding a Buy It Now price to your auction because there are plenty of people who will see your blog, want to buy it but don’t want to get involved in a bidding war. If you optimistically set your Buy It Now price then you could achieve a price higher for your blog than you would do had it sold through the auction process.
