Your website empire setup for free? Part 1
Creating an online business has never been easier or cheaper than now. The variety of tools and free resources available to us today just didn’t exist even a few years ago. But they do now. And you should be taking full advantage of all of them. If you’re hoping to get serious about flipping websites and blogs and you don’t want to spend a lot of cash to start up you business, then this article is for you!
This article is quite long so I broke it up into a two parts. The first part is about your actual home desktop computer and the free software you should be using to run it. The second article discusses how to get spreadsheets, a word processor, and everything else you’ll need to keep in touch with clients and keep all of your records straight. Again, all for free! So on to the information.
Currently I run all of my computers on Ubuntu Linux as my computer operating system. Why? Well, there are a number of reasons. First and foremost is, it’s free. No, I am no computer geek and if there is a problem I need to go onto the net and find the answer. But with today’s Linux, it’s almost as easy to install and use as Windows is. Really!
Second, if you really need to save a few dollars, Linux is very light on your system. What that means is that if you have a very old computer and Windows won’t run on it – Windows hogs a LOT of RAM – Linux will. So you could perhaps find an old computer that someone is throwing away or buy one super cheap, install Linux and you’re good to go. I have heard that a of of public schools are going this route to save on updating costs!
Third, with the standard Ubuntu install you get most of the software you’d need to run your business included in the distribution. Again, completely free. Things like HTML editors, mail clients, desktop video recorders, Bit torrent software, many different movie and music players, Pidgin for all of your chats on one system, FileZilla ftp client to upload or download files to your server, a zipping and unzipping utility, a ton of programs for anything related to writing scripts or working on the web.
Fourth, Linux is secure! The reason I switched to Linux was that I kept getting all kinds of viruses on my Windows XP desktop. I had all the latest anti-everything programs and it just didn’t matter. You need to understand, Windows is horribly insecure. If you think I am lying here, go to Goggle and search about how secure Windows is. It’s truly laughable. Now if I am creating a bunch of sites on my computer, the last thing I need is a virus destroying or corrupting my work. Or worse, somehow getting into a script on a site and messing with a customers server later on. That sure wouldn’t get me much good feedback back on Flippa!
You need to understand that Linux was created for computers geeks by computer geeks. And I mean that in a positive sense. It grew as things were needed and right now thousands and thousands of programmers all over the world work on improving it and and implementing any new necessary security patches in moments. Not days or weeks like other platforms. No other software can say that. That’s one of the reasons why Linux is the most secure of all of the operating systems out there. FYI – if you don’t know, Apple’s platforms and Google’s software as well as Android are all based on Unix/Linux. There are a lot of companies using Unix or Linux in some way. And most of the world’s website run on Linux. That’s right. Most servers are running Linux because it’s so secure.
Speaking of servers, how about running you new flipping business with NO server costs? If you really feeling techie, you can always try to create and manage a Ubuntu Linux server, which again is totally free. And as I stated above, most servers in the world already run on Linux. This website you are reading right now is as well. So if you have an old desktop computer lying around, it’s quite interesting to set it up as a server and play around with it. It’ll teach you a lot about how the web is set up and works. Always great skills to have if you are flipping websites for a living!
And you can store all of your sites on that server. Home servers should be fine in most instances because you are not worries about speed. Rather, you are usually just aging the site and leaving it somewhere customers on for your auction can see it. But you can always go the extra step and begin your own web hosting company! There are a lot of distributions of Linux Server, check the internet to find the best one for you. There are so many more reasons to use Ubuntu Linux or any other Linux distributions, but I’ll stop here.
This is going to be the end of the first in a series of two articles. I hope you’ve enjoyed this one and have gotten something useful from it. If you have any questions or comments, please let em know. Thanks!
